Acute Cholecystitis

Acute cholecystitis is a common inflammatory condition of the gallbladder, usually caused by gallstones. It presents with intense abdominal pain and often requires immediate medical evaluation, as symptoms may worsen if not treated promptly.

What is Acute Cholecystitis;

Acute cholecystitis is a sudden inflammation of the gallbladder, a small organ located below the liver that is involved in the digestion of fats. In most cases it is caused by obstruction of the cystic duct due to gallstones.

The condition requires immediate medical assessment, as it can lead to complications if not treated promptly.

Common symptoms include:

  • intravenous administration of fluids and antibiotics

  • referred pain to the back or right shoulder

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • fever

  • sensitivity to the pressure of the abdomen

Treatment

The treatment of acute cholecystitis depends on the severity of the inflammation and the general condition of the patient. Early diagnosis with clinical examination and imaging (usually ultrasound) is crucial.

The treatment may include:

  • intravenous administration of fluids and antibiotics

  • painkilling medication

  • monitoring in a hospital setting

  • laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal), when required

In most cases, the final solution is the surgical removal of the gallbladder, which is performed with a minimally invasive technique.

Recovery

Recovery after treatment of acute cholecystitis depends on the method of treatment and timing of intervention.

During recovery:

  • follow a light, low-fat diet

  • compliance with the post-operative instructions

  • avoid intense physical stress for a certain period

  • gradual return to daily activities

In most cases, recovery is smooth and the patient returns to normal life promptly.
