Cholelithiasis

Cholelithiasis is a condition in which stones form in the bile and can cause pain and digestive problems. It is one of the most common causes of pain in the upper right region of the abdomen.

What Is Cholelithiasis?

Cholelithiasis occurs when stones form in the gallbladder due to a disturbance in bile composition. In many cases it may not cause symptoms, but when the stones move or cause inflammation, symptoms become acute. Many patients seek medical advice when they experience sudden pain after eating.

The most common symptoms of gallstones are:

  • pain in the right upper part of the abdomen

  • pain after fatty meals

  • nausea or vomiting

  • bloating and indigestion

  • referred pain to the back or right shoulder

Treatment

The treatment depends on whether there are symptoms and their frequency. In asymptomatic cases, monitoring without surgery may be recommended. However, when recurrent episodes of pain or inflammation occur, surgical treatment is the safest option.

The treatment may include:

  • monitoring without surgery in mild cases

  • medication to relieve symptoms

  • surgical removal of the gall bladder when the symptoms persist

Recovery

Recovery after surgical treatment of gallstones is typically swift. Most patients return to their daily activities quickly.

During recovery:

  • early gentle mobilisation is encouraged

  • diet is gradually reintroduced

  • follow the doctor's instructions

  • full return to normal activities within a short period
